Mersea Island

Mersea Island is one of Essex's surprise beauty spots. Reached by a causeway called the Strood it is sometimes cut off by the tide. There are two very different sides to the island.

Packing Shed Island

East Mersea sea birds

West Mersea is a busy village with beaches, sailing clubs, fishing boats, beach huts and oyster bars. West Mersea is famous for its oysters which have been grown by generations of the same families.

They are called Colchester Natives and are known all over the world for their fabulous flavour.

East Mersea on the other hand is more remote and isolated with huge views and exposed quiet beaches. There are lots of lovely walks where one can spot a multitude of sea birds and other wildlife. Mostly farmed there are also some small growers of soft fruits and vegetables.
